Wendy Armbruster-Bell is an Elite+ Mompreneur® Member based in Vancouver, BC. She’s been a successful entrepreneur for several businesses, and we’re excited to share her stories for success behind her company Snugabell.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Snugabell is actually my third business so I suppose entrepreneurship is in my blood.
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
I love the flexibility, the challenges, and the daily lessons, but mostly I love the amazing people I get to meet and collaborate with.
Can you describe a typical day?
I get up early, work out and take care of any pressing emails. Then I get my kids off to school and go for a run. (I problem solve and brainstorm product development during my daily runs.) Next is a hearty brunch and some reading. Then it’s back to the office for more emails, special project work or perhaps a meeting with a mentee or colleague. My days are too short!
Who do you count on for help?
I count on my husband, my mom and my sister for help. And my amazing staff of course!
Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?
Absolutely; and I used to feel guilty about it. However it is what it is. My girls (almost 9 and 11) have grown up with my business and understand that sometimes it takes priority and sometimes they take priority. It is most certainly balanced.
What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?
Despite how hard I work I do indeed know how to relax! I am quite good at “turning it all off” now. This past spring our family went on a week-long Caribbean cruise and there was NO internet! It was actually a slice of heaven. In the past, especially when the girls were younger, it was definitely harder.
Are you active in your community? What does supporting local mean to you?
We are a member of LOCOBC and most of our vendors are local companies. In fact, I’ve been posting on my personal Facebook about the amazing local businesses that we are so lucky to work with on a daily basis. Supporting our local community is very important to us here at Snugabell. My husband (and silent partner) is very active in our community – volunteering with numerous organizations over the years – most recently Operation Red Nose.
Name another entrepreneur who inspires you.
Elaine Tan Comeau of Easy Daysies for her never-ending energy and drive and Madeleine Shaw of Lunapads for her vision, sage advice and social awareness. (Sorry, I needed to name two.)
What does the future look like for you and your business?
We are working hard to continue to grow the business through new and existing channels, diversify our product line, and exit in 3-5 years through acquisition.
Any tips for moms thinking of starting a business?
Do your research, write a business plan and then go for it. And don’t be afraid to ask for help – there is a fabulous network of women entrepreneurs, that were at one time in exactly the same place as you, that would love to help!
