What is your “WHY” behind your business/being an entrepreneur?
After my miracle daughter was born in 2008, I decided I did not want to return to the corporate world and instead started researching how I could start a company helping other businesses with their marketing and advertising – something I had years of experience and education in. I earned a Virtual Assistant certificate from Algonquin College to compliment my pre-existing education and experience, and have since helped small businesses, executives and entrepreneurs communicate effectively both offline and online.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
I have always had a desire to work for myself, but I wasn’t sure how I could. I have a passion for marketing and communications and love the power of the written word to express ideas, sell an idea and build relationships. I decided to take my skills and passion and offer it to small businesses to see if there was a need for them… and there is!

What’s the best part about owning your own business?
I love the ability to make my own hours and take responsibility for my own work and ideas (both good and bad). I also love helping business owners grow their businesses through online relationships while at the same time building a relationship with the business owner themselves!

What impact did other people/experiences have on you, and how did they help you get to where you are in your business today?

One of my first clients, who is still a client, not only taught me a lot about what it means to build a business, but how to do it in a way that still allows for a work-life balance and is financially rewarding. She is a real-life example of the importance of word-of-mouth referrals and helped grow my business into a multi-virtual assistant company.

What values do you believe in and live by, and how do they shine through when it comes to your role as a business owner?
I am a true believer in having a work-life balance and taking time for yourself and your family. I love being able to drop everything to take my daughter to appointments, accompany her on school field trips, as well as meet up with people for lunch or coffee. Life is too short to “hustle.” I believe a satisfying business will work with you to create a life and business that is rewarding on all levels.

What are you most proud of when it comes to your business/being an entrepreneur?
I set goals for myself and make sure they come true. My first goal was to make more money in my business then I did working for someone else. I am proud to say I surpassed that goal a long time ago! For 2019, I set a goal to write more for myself because I found myself always writing for my business or ghostwriting for others. I am now a regular contributor to a couple of local newspapers in Ottawa and I am very happy that I have fulfilled that goal. I am proud of myself for being able to do what I set out to do. I think it sets a good example for my daughter … and it makes me smile.

What does the future look like for you and your business?
I am looking forward to growing my business more. I would love to be in a position to hire someone part-time as opposed to subcontracting. I also look forward to building on my skills, knowledge, and foundation and helping other women, looking to do similar work, do the same.

Any tips for women thinking of starting a business?
Do your research, be prepared to network and meet exciting people, and follow your gut. If an opportunity seems to too good to be true, it just might be. As well, get ready to work hard. Starting and running a business takes a lot of work, but it’s satisfying work and the end result is so worth it.
