What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart. I started a newspaper route when I was just 7 years old, and it grew so big I had to split it. When I was in college I started an art supply company and I sold Avon. Flash-forward many years and now I’m growing my second multi-million dollar company.
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
I love the freedom of owning my own business. I get to change people’s lives – I get to create a vision for a better world for people. There’s no better feeling in the world than knowing you built something where nothing existed before. It’s exhilarating and it keeps you pushing forward.
Can you describe a typical day?
Every day brings new challenges and new fires to put out! But I always start with a check-in with our team, and then we work hard to create the tools our business partners need to be successful. My days may start early and run late, but each day is exciting and I am grateful I get to do this!
Who do you count on for help? Do you have a network of family that answer the call?
My family and my team help me whenever I need them. My husband helps run the financial aspect of my company and my daughter takes the time to work out the nutritional information for the recipes I make for Protein Treats (my cooking show on YouTube). My team of creative geniuses is always there to give me feedback on projects or ideas I’m working on. I’ve never felt alone in my business because, as a team, we’re never siloed.
Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?
I truly believe that the things we appreciate the most are the ones we have struggled and sacrificed the most for. Starting a business from the ground up and creating something where nothing existed before is a challenge – it means sacrificing time with friends, with personal time and sometimes even with family. I prioritize my time with my children, so a social life outside of my family and our business simply isn’t an option. It might be a sacrifice – but it’s one I am grateful to be able to make.
What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?
I believe that the idea of a work-life balance when you are an entrepreneur is a myth. I love what I do and knowing that we are helping people change their lives gives me the drive and the passion to keep pushing forward. I very rarely take a day off, but each year I take a trip with each of my kids. They get to choose where we go and I leave my phone powered down and spend the time one-on-one with them.
Are you active in your community? What does supporting local mean to you?
We are proud to be a Canadian company. Our product supports farmers, and creates good paying local jobs. And more than that – we are proud to be a network marketing company. Instead of our product being sold in big box stories where the mark-up goes to huge corporations, we choose to pay the people who know and love our products. And that keeps money in our local communities and supports families directly. I’m very proud of that! We also donate 3% of our pre-tax profits to local charities because we believe that strong communities make all of us stronger.
Name another entrepreneur who inspires you.
Arlene Dickinson inspires me every day. Not only is she Canadian, but she became a self-made multi-millionaire.
What does the future look like for you and your business?
We are so excited for the next year with Nutracelle! We have already grown faster in one year than many network-marketing companies accomplish in their first several years. We have new products coming out like Baking Mixes and Protein Bars. And seeing how many people’s lives are being transformed with better health and more income – we are ready to keep growing!
Any tips for moms thinking of starting a business?
Being a Mom is the most challenging job in the world. And most Mom’s have skills that are critical for running a successful business – they already know how to manage a team, and they know they want a better life for their kids, whether that means more time and freedom or more income. And Mom’s know how to work hard. It’s often said that if you treat your business like a hobby, it will pay you like a hobby. But if you treat it like a business, it can truly change your life. Setting aside time for YOU to focus on growing your business is one the first steps to success! Be a life-long learner, read books and take online courses to learn the fundamentals and most of all – have fun!
