About The Kind Matter Company
The Kind Matter Company guides families through their transition into adopting earth friendly practices within their home. The time between each subscription box delivery allows subscribers to comfortably implement practices into their daily lives before new ones are introduced. We feel that offering sustainable living options into homes at a slower pace ensures that people can confidently continue with these practices without feeling overwhelmed, therefore having a positive impact on their families and on our environment. Our education-focused online presence allows subscribers to truly understand the positive impact they are making with each small effort.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
I realized that after years of doing my own research on the state of our planet and ultimately implementing sustainable practices into my own home, I had become an advocate for our environment and was excited to help others do the same. I knew that I could not just sit back and continue doing what I was doing on a small scale; I needed to assist as many people as I could with their transition to a more eco-conscious way of living.
What is your “WHY” behind your business/being an entrepreneur?
My passion for sustainable living began with changing to a plant-based diet 20 years ago, and then later becoming very aware of the harmful chemicals that are present in so many products that we use daily. The more I researched the impact all of this was having on our health, as well as the health of our Earth, the more I knew I needed to change daily habits in my own home. As I began implementing sustainable living practices, friends and family (and sometimes strangers) would inquire and ask for advice on how to begin their own eco-friendly journey. I realized that in most cases, people’s resistance to sustainable living comes more from not knowing where to begin and ultimately the feeling of overwhelm. I knew that part of my journey would be to educate people in a way that would leave them feeling inspired and wanting to become part of the change. I have 2 daughters and want to ensure that they have a healthy planet on which to live their lives and raise their own families one day.
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
Having my children see that being successful doesn’t have to fit into any specific box is what keeps me inspired to do what I do. I have been a self-taught artist for the past 12 years and now balance my art as well as my new venture, so they have grown up knowing that they can be whatever they decide to be. They are always encouraged to follow their passions, and are told that their own success can never be measured by someone else’s beliefs. I am proud to be able to provide this lesson to them and know it will serve them well when they grow up.
What impact did other people/experiences have on you, and how did they help you get to where you are in your business today?
My husband is, and always has been, my biggest supporter. He believes in me fully and encourages me to chase after whatever dream I have, big or small. I feel like he has helped me get to where I am today by putting full trust in my judgement and by working harder within his own business to allow me the opportunity to explore new possibilities.
What values do you believe in and live by, and how do they shine through when it comes to your role as a business owner?
I believe that doing anything strictly for financial gain is rarely successful, and that you must truly believe in and be passionate about what you are doing. Others need to be able to feel your true self in order to believe what you are telling or teaching them. I live my life striving to be as true to myself as possible and know that when I am, people feel that genuineness and are drawn to it. I am so passionate about living as sustainable a life as possible, but also understand that this type of lifestyle looks different to every single person. I want to show others that sustainability is not a competition, but rather a way to collectively help ourselves, each other and our planet with every single small effort we make.
What are you most proud of when it comes to your business/being an entrepreneur?
I am most proud of being able to help support my family while also making a positive impact on our environment. I am also proud that I have taken the step forward to begin this venture even when things have felt daunting and overwhelming. I know that with hard work comes reward and I feel empowered knowing that my kids will be able to look back and see that I have given them a voice to advocate for what they believe in.
What does the future look like for you and your business?
I see my business becoming a major player in educating people in the importance of sustainability and showing them how attainable this is when we work together as a collective. I see my company inspiring people to take action and to demand changes within our communities and around the world. I want to show people that I am invested in this cause and that each small effort plays a part in the big picture.
Any tips for women thinking of starting a business?
Stay true to what you believe in and be persistent! If something doesn’t work the first time, try doing it a different way! People can only believe in what you are trying to accomplish if you believe in it as well.
