Jodie Pappas is an Elite Mompreneur member based out of Oakville, Ontario, and is the founder of Clean Kiss Organics. When she couldn’t find a natural deodorant that actually worked, she decided to create it herself. She also didn’t want her three daughters to grow up exposed to harmful chemicals on their developing and impressionable bodies. From there, the company was born and now has a full line of natural body and face skincare products that are specially formulated for health conscious families, that doesn’t compromise quality, and actually work! We are so excited to share Jodie’s Success Story!
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
My story is much like so many other entrepreneurs. I worked the corporate grind and was very proud of my successes up the corporate ladder and my paycheque but felt empty creatively, unbalanced, and guilty to not be more present for my young daughters. My journey into entrepreneurship started with a book I wrote and self-published in 2005 after one of my twin daughters was born with a birth defect and required extensive surgery to reconstruct her cranium. The experience really opened my eyes and led me to want for so much more meaning and purpose from my life. I left the corporate world and opened a daycare franchise in 2007, so that my twin toddler daughters could be with me at work each day, and then I acquired a second location in 2013. In 2014, I started Clean Kiss Organics and realized I had finally found my lifetime passion when I realized the huge gap that existed in natural, clean deodorant for active people that truly worked. Sure, there were lots of natural deodorants on the market but none that actually worked through my tough workouts, hot yoga sessions, or my smelly stress sweat. I used my passion for cooking and my creativity for whipping up some fun in the kitchen to come up with a winning formula and from there my natural skincare company was launched.
What is your “WHY” behind your business/being an entrepreneur?
My why is simple. Literally. I wanted to use clean, simple, chemical-free products that actually work well and don’t compromise your health. Since I am an entrepreneur to my core, I decided to make them for myself to be sure they were safe and healthy, but most of all produced effective results. I am extremely health conscious and look after my body through daily exercise and yoga, my mind through meditation and spending time doing things I love like eating well, being a foodie, spending time with my family and puppy, and of course dreaming up new enterprising ideas to solve people’s challenges!
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
I love that I never get the Sunday blues, I no longer dread getting out of my bed each morning, and the best part is knowing that I make an impact in other’s lives with the clean skin and haircare products they use which promote their health rather than harm them. My tagline is “one armpit at a time” on the journey to making a healthier world. I also love spending time talking to people about making the switch to healthier choices for themselves and their families. The news and information needs to be shared! Give me a mic and I can give you the reasons why.
What impact did other people/experiences have on you, and how did they help you get to where you are in your business today?
First and foremost my husband has been my rock, my daily cheerleader and sounding board, and is always willing to help me be successful along my journey. He is my person. Other influences have come from the incredible strong female entrepreneurs I have met over the years that have shown me that anything is truly possible if you can envision it.
What values do you believe in and live by, and how do they shine through when it comes to your role as a business owner?
I value my family, finding true happiness, spirituality, and health above wealth. In order to foster these values I always think of my “why” before making any decisions. I ask myself “will this _____ bring me closer or further away from my goals and values”? If it isn’t leading me in the right direction I know in my heart the answer has to be no. And if I am just being a chicken and scared to make a move even though I know it is the right thing, I remind myself of my life motto: “Feel the fear and do it anyway”! I can only hope that my three daughters will be confident, strong and also be willing to take risks and ask for what they want in life.
What are you most proud of when it comes to your business/being an entrepreneur?
I am proud of my ability to see an opportunity, weigh the risks, and then go for it! I love taking on new challenges both personally and professionally. If I don’t know the “how” or “what”, I do my research to find out. Like, what did I know about making deodorant, skincare or hair care!?
What does the future look like for you and your business?
I want my brand to be an iconic Canadian female success story. I want all women, men and families to ditch the chemicals in their personal care products and feel confident knowing they can use Clean Kiss Organics natural products that truly do work and promote their health at the same time.
Any tips for women thinking of starting a business?
Yes, do it! Do your research, pick up the phone, ask for coffee dates, take the risk. You will only get there by being bold and going after what you want and believe.
