What is your “WHY” behind your business/being an entrepreneur?
I love children and I love being a part of their personal growth and development and guiding them to becoming successful goal driven adults. Every year when students graduate from our programs, I receive thank you cards and notes from them. They thank me for all the life lessons they have learned over the years and how these have impacted their lives in such a positive way. This makes my heart sing! Being an entrepreneur allows me to follow my dreams, set my own hours, create my life and give back. This year in honour of our 20th Year Anniversary, we celebrated through a fundraising Dinner Dance. We are so proud to have raised $10,000.00 for the Sick Kids Foundation.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
What inspired me to be an entrepreneur was the opportunity to be my own boss, and to have more time, money and freedom in my life. I have been blessed to be able to pursue my passion and make it a career. Dance has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. When you love what you do, you never feel like you are working. I was teaching dance at other studios but wanted to do more. I didn’t feel like I was part of a team or a family and wanted to create a place for dance teachers to be recognized for their talents and feel valued. We are a team of 15 dance teachers. There is a saying that goes “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of successful women who have her back.” I am blessed to have my tribe!
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
The best part about owning my own business is the personal growth and development I have learned along the way. As an entrepreneur, being fully responsible for the success and failures of a business can be overwhelming. Entrepreneurship has led me to do a lot of work on myself. I have a yearly budget for business training and professional development courses and books. I am always working on becoming a better version of myself. I truly believe that my business can only grow as much as I do. Since opening my studio in 1998, I became a health and wellness coach and an independent consultant with Arbonne, and I partnered with my significant other Cory in a real estate business. The benefit to owning several businesses is the diversified income.
Describe people and/or experiences that have been instrumental to you along your journey to entrepreneurship:
My daughter, Chyrelle! As a single mom, I wanted to be able to give my daughter everything that I could. As an entrepreneur I was able to provide her with a beautiful home, be there for her whenever she needed me, I was able to drive her to and from school, give her the opportunity to participate in different activities, have yearly mother/daughter vacations and so much more. Knowing that I had to provide for her made me want to succeed even more. She has been my biggest supporter and cheerleader along the way. She is now a member of my staff and an excellent teacher and role model for the students.
What values do you believe in and live by, and how do they shine through when it comes to your role as a business owner?
As a business owner, living by these values show that I am dedicated to being a positive role model to my students and staff.
What are you most proud of when it comes to your business/being an entrepreneur?
What I am most proud of in my business is the positive influence and mentorship that myself and my team provide to the students. I am also very proud of all the success my students and staff have had over the years at competitions. We win Overall Top Marks and Overall Top Studio awards yearly and are always being rewarded and acknowledged by the judges as a studio that is positive, polite, respectful, friendly and supportive.
What does the future look like for you and your business?
As I start my 21st season, I am so excited about all the goals we continue to strive for and achieve. I have the most outstanding staff and team that we call our MADfam. We are committed to the growth, accomplishments and overall success of all our students, past, present and future. I look forward to continuing to provide the highest quality of dance education.
Any tips for other women thinking of starting a business?
“If you don’t build your dream, someone else will hire you to build theirs.”
I believe that everyone is meant to share their gift with the world. Find what that is for you and create the life you were meant to live. As an entrepreneur you must be willing to face the fear and do it anyway. Embrace every failure as a learning opportunity and a time for growth. If you are thinking about starting your own business, just do it! Step into your leadership, take that chance and enjoy the journey. You will be happy you did!
