2015 Mompreneur® of the Year

Andrea Iervella 2015 Mompreneur of the Year - Mompreneur Award of Excellence presented by TruShield Insurance

This past weekend marked a celebration of International Women’s Day, as well as recognition for the achievements of Mompreneurs across Canada! We are honoured and excited to announce the Grand Prize Winner of The 2015 Mompreneur® Award of Excellence, presented by TruShield Insurance:

Andrea Iervella of Calgary, AB – Founder of SchoolWorx

Andrea was one of 12 Finalists up for this year’s award – a collaboration between ParentsCanada and Mompreneurs®, and the only finalist based outside of Ontario. Her acceptance speech was moving, as she told of her struggles in running her business between naptimes and meeting the needs of her family. Andrea encouraged other attendees to ‘put themselves out there’, telling her story of attending the previous year’s Mompreneurs® Conference, getting outside of her comfort zone and aiming to make as many connections as possible, not knowing a single person in the room. She had set a goal for herself to be on-stage at the 2015 Mompreneurs® Conference & Awards, and told the audience that if she could do it they could too. Andrea was congratulated on stage by Tony O’Brien, Senior Vice President for Small Business & Personal Lines at TruShield Insurance, as well as given an emotional send-off from 2014 Grand Prize Winner Elaine Tan Comeau of Easy Daysies. We are thrilled at what this next year will hold in store for Andrea, and we can’t wait to share her story with other moms and entrepreneurs around the country! How it worked: Nominations began in November, 2014. All nominees were encouraged to ask for votes from friends, family, and colleagues in order to help them place as an official finalist for Round 1 of the Award. Additionally, 2 “Wild Card” finalists were chosen by the Judges Panel; these were nominees who the judges felt should be in the finalist round but who did not have accumulated votes to get them there.  Once the 12 Finalists were announced, each finalist then submitted a rigorous “Finalists Essay” where they were able to tell their story and describe their journey to “mompreneurship” more fully. Judges were then set to the task of allocating points to the finalists, based on their essay submission, surrounding the following criteria and points system:

  1. Product/Service Innovation: Is the product/service innovative and helpful to address the needs of Canadians? Are there key differentiators for the business that have contributed to its success? [200 points]
  2. Growth Potential and Scalability: Does the business show potential to scale up and grow, whether through geographic or market expansion, product line extension, franchising etc? [200 points]
  3. Revenue: Does the business possess a healthy revenue stream demonstrating that the business has moved beyond the idea stage to one able to derive revenue? [100 points]
  4. Community Impact: Has the finalist made a meaningful and positive impact on the community through donations, leadership roles, etc? [100 points]
  5. Inspiration to Others: Does the finalist have an inspirational story that will inspire other moms to choose the path of entrepreneurship? [200 points]
