What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
I was always an outstanding employee in my various jobs. There came a time when I felt that I could use my skills, talents and experiences to start building my own business where I could get higher returns on effort. The freedom of being an entrepreneur where I am in charge of all my decisions was the motivating factor.

What’s the best part about owning your own business?
Knowing that I will reap 100% rewards of all the efforts. Being able to take business risks and venturing into the unknown is the freedom one gets out of owning a business. I am answerable to no one and the responsibility to succeed is solely on my own shoulders.

Can you describe a typical day?
There is no such thing as a typical day in my life as each day is a balancing act between work, family, household etc. Having 3 teenagers to manage, being an Insurance Broker with clients all over the GTA and a Managing General Agency (MGA) in a location outside my home town, I am constantly on the go. My children are in high school. There are after school activities, tuitions, college applications to manage, then there are my insurance clients who realize they need to buy travel insurance from me when sitting at the airport . My weekly calendar is strewn with meetings with clients, one-on-one time with children and husband and a wide array of activities ranging from community and networking events to scheduled trainings for professional and personal development and quiet time at my desk spent in designing insurance solutions for clients with unique needs.

Who do you count on for help? Do you have a network of family that answer the call?
My husband Zafar is my support system. He is a one-man army who helps me in every way possible in my business and at home. I migrated to Canada 3 years ago from Pakistan, so all the friends I have are relatively new. I moved from Toronto to Milton a year ago when I again met new people in my community and neighbourhood. I now have some close friends, but it’s still fairly recent that I’ve met them.

Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?
I do not believe that anyone makes conscious sacrifices. There are decisions one makes based on their values and life choices. As an entrepreneur, I made a conscious decision that I will spend a large part of my day building a business which will benefit my family and help my  professional and personal growth.

What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?
I love off-days. I spend them with my family either at home or outdoors. If my family is busy, I relax at home by watching movies on Netflix or reading. I take one day off every week – and that could be any day of the week. Although I do not schedule client meetings on my day off, I do check my work email at least twice during the day.

Are you active in your community? What does supporting local mean to you?
I look for opportunities to reach out to my community. Supporting local is attending and sponsoring local community events. It is also using local businesses for my personal needs and referring their products and services to others.

Name another entrepreneur who inspires you.
I am inspired by Oprah Winfrey, J.K. Rowling and Anthony Robbins. All three have made millions believing in their dreams and transforming lives.

What does the future look like for you and your business?
The future looks very bright as I have my heart in the right place – I work tirelessly to provide my clients peace of mind, financial security and empowerment. I have packaged my services that make my business unique in Canada by combining insurance services with personal development coaching. All my life insurance clients are offered a free membership in a program called “The Bucket List Build-up”. This is a unique program with a life coach in which people stretch their imagination, challenging themselves to devise a constantly evolving “Bucket List”.  Our seasoned life coach motivates and encourages them during the private one-on-one coaching sessions to develop strategies to accomplish all the dreams listed on their Bucket List. This is a completely free service that all my life insurance clients are offered when they work with UZ Insurance Solutions.

Any tips for women thinking of starting a business?
Work on your business by putting in as little as 30 minutes a day on developing your big idea. The time spent in idea generation and creatively putting a business plan together requires patience, introspection and market research (including some test marketing). Children and businesses can grow side by side each having a special place in the one’s heart.
