What inspired you to become and entrepreneur?
I feel I have always had an entrepreneur’s heart. I always loved working hard to accomplish a project, working longer hours, and the feeling that I am really making a difference. Being an entrepreneur has all those perks plus I get to make my own schedule. I work more than I would at a 9-5 job, but I have the freedom to ensure my family’s needs are taken care of as well. The best part is the foundation you get to build in order to help others.
What is the best part about owing your own business?
I absolutely love being able to listen to my internal guidance system. I love being able to invest in the courses and with the people that completely energize me, so I can go off and be brilliant at what I do.
Can you describe a typical day?
Every day is different because my portfolio is expansive. Usually I get up, get the kids off to school, do my mini workout, hop on the computer to do my online work, and then I meet with clients and perspective buyers.
Who do you count on for help? Do you have a network of family that answer the call?
My number one supporter is my husband. I secretly think he just loves to watch me shine. He loves seeing me gain confidence in what I do. He is there for help within our home, but most importantly he is there for mental and emotional guidance. Although I may not always appreciate his advice when I may not agree of course, he is a solid foundation for me to grow my dreams on. I have a few amazing friends, a kick-ass mother, and one heck of a sister that all support me as well, not to mention my little munchkins; when I am not looking they turn on the karaoke machine and pretend to inspire audiences just like mommy.
Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?
Oh yeah. It is one of the hardest things I have had to do. I have to admit, I do love that I have that problem. It means I have a great business and wonderful family that I want to give my all to both. I am very lucky.
What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off means?
I sure do know what that means! I never used to, but as I become more seasoned, I understand and put into practice how important time off is. On a day off you can find me out for a hike with my sweet little dog, or at the ski hill, or with a good book. If it is summer, you will see me bathing in the sun or on a boat – I just love that.
Are you active in your community? What does supporting local mean to you?
You betcha! I currently co-host a show called “MoMondays”. It is a show were we feature and celebrate people from the community to come together for fun, entertainment and connection.
I also am diligent about “paying it forward” – I love to do random acts to lift the spirits of others.
Name another entrepreneur who inspires you.
Ted Strauss. Ted is my dad, and I am currently his building representative and the director of sales and marketing for his company. I have seen his business soar and I have seen it stumble and I have watched him keep taking step after step and never give up. Even when I thought he had run out of road to walk on, he kept going to land himself back on top.
What does the future look like for you and your business?
It is bright and brilliant! Each year I do the work to become more and more clear about who I am and what I am bringing to this world through my business. I am excited to continue to speak about things that make a difference. I am over the moon excited to be a part of Valleyrauss Homes and to be a part of building homes for others. The process is much more than walls, bricks and paint for me. It is about building a place and an energy where people will come home every day, where they will share laughter and tears. It is a safe space for them to lay their heads. I just love helping to create that for others.
Any tips for women thinking of starting a business?
DO IT! You have a legacy to leave. You have an opportunity to let your kids see you fly, and fall, and then fly again. Involve them. Show them what going after your dream looks like. Our kids will not be working in the same world we started in; they want more. I truly believe it is our job to show them how to do it. As a Dream Builder Coach, I see the power of this all the time. You see, the glory is not necessarily in the achieving of the BIG DREAM. It is the person we get to become along the way.
