What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
As a woman who wanted to age “positively”, I put together a group of health professionals who could offer services that were not readily available.
What is your “WHY” behind your business/being an entrepreneur?
Everyday I have clients who tell me that I have changed their life in some way. Whether it is something small like removing a mole or helping them sleep better at night. I am able to help, inspire, motivate, teach, listen, empathize, guide, and counsel others on a wide range of issues.
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
Being able to offer services and products that I feel passionate about, that I can confidently recommend and that I would want to use for myself or a loved one.
Can you describe a typical day?
Awaken and enjoy time with my husband and family. Have breakfast, shower and dress for work. Walk our 2 dogs. Drive to work which is about 20 minutes away. Often bring my toy poodle to work with me. Begin seeing clients at 9am and work til 5pm. I often have lunch at my desk. During the day there may be administrative issues that need my attention and I will take care of these throughout the day. My dog Lily joins me in appointments with my clients or spends time with my staff at the front desk.
Who do you count on for help?
I have staff that are passionate and like minded who I can count on. My husband has always been there for me to vent, bounce ideas and keep me grounded.
Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?
In order to start my business, I sacrificed many years of steady income and had to cash in my RRSPs. I got a very large bank loan that was repaid over many years. I had to work 7 days a week initially to make ends meet. I couldn’t have done this without much support to provide for our children. In my case, my husband was very instrumental. At times during the last decade, I sacrificed work in order to care for my mother who was gravely ill and needed to be cared for.
What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?
I love to do crafty things like crochet, knit and sew. I used to work 7 days a week early on in my business but now that I have 11 years under my belt, I have been able to delegate more and now work 3 days a week. I am now able to attend aquafit classes during the day, yoga in the evening. I am able to spend time with my 90 year old mother and visit with some of my favourite people on my days off.
What does the future look like for you and your business?
I would like to teach more whether it is to students, other doctors or lay people about the benefits of bio identical hormones. I would also like to write a book (which I have started) that will help in educating others.
Any tips for women thinking of starting a business?
Believe in your ideas. Do it your way. Be passionate. Be real.
