What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
The freedom to create my own destiny. My success or failures are my own. It is exciting to me to not be limited by my employer on how much income I make or what I do.
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
I love my life now! I love that I have a flexible work schedule so that I can be available for my family and that I’m able to incorporate our family trips with my work as a travel agent. I have the ability to work from my home office and not commuting to a “brick and mortar” workplace.
Can you describe a typical day?
I usually start my day returning emails and working on my social media. Then, when my travel suppliers are open I begin to work on quoting and bookings for my clients. Later, I usually have meetings with clients to go over their travel documents and packages. I like to have a personal relationship with my clients and arrange to meet in person. I go over everything with them and answer any questions.
Who do you count on for help? Do you have a network of family that answer the call?
I am in a place in my life where most of my children are grown and have “left the nest”, with only one teenage daughter left at home. I have a wonderful husband and he is a great support for me.
Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?
I’d be lying if I answered no. It’s a balance I try to keep between home and work. I schedule family commitments first into my calendar and work around them as much as possible. I just left a very demanding career and I’m so thankful I have more work life balance in my new business. Life is too short and my work life/business is just a part of it and doesn’t consume me anymore.
What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?
I try to take the weekends off where possible. That’s the time to get errands and household chores completed. It’s also family time with my husband and children. I like to plan something fun like going to the movies or out to dinner.
Are you active in your community? What does supporting local mean to you?
I am active in a lot of different aspects of my community from the food bank, neighbourhood association to school council. I especially love volunteering at my children’s schools. I’ve worn a lot of different hats over the years from school council chair, to milk and pizza coordinator! It’s a great experience working in the schools and getting to know the principal and teachers. My children loved seeing me through the day as well. Supporting local means to support the “little guy” and the “mom and pop” establishments in my community. I try to do this as much as possible. We have some wonderful shops and restaurants here in Guelph.
Name another entrepreneur who inspires you.
All entrepreneurs inspire me. It takes a leap of faith and courage to try something new! If I had to name one it would be my husband Sam. He started his own business four years ago and never looked back! It took courage to leave a steady Friday paycheck with a family to support and start his own electrical contracting company. His strong work ethic and enthusiasm and passion to succeed is an inspiration to me.
What does the future look like for you and your business?
The future is bright! I’ve had great success in this short time in this new industry. I have followed my passion and I feel this is what I should have been doing from the start. Life is a journey and I’m loving this new chapter of my life!
“Around here we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious … and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths”
– Walt Disney
Any tips for other women thinking of starting a business?
Do what you love! There is a saying which really resonates with me, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”. Life is too short not to enjoy your career! Also, find a great mentor and lean on them for guidance and advice.
