If you’re looking to really start growing your business, email marketing is an awesome way to expand your customer base. One major stumbling point for some, though, is building your subscriber list. Fret not, we have several sure-fire steps to get your email list booming. Let’s take a look!
1. Get an email marketing service.
This step might seem a bit obvious, but it is an important one. Email marketing services give you access to powerful list-management systems, opt-out functionality that will help you comply with government anti-spam laws, and the ability to quickly create professional-looking marketing emails. GoDaddy has an amazing email marketing product that meets all of these needs and is easy to use for email marketing beginners.
If you’re starting out small, you might think, “Why do I need to get a email marketing service right away?” You can handle a small list of subscribers yourself, right? Not so fast. The other angle to consider is that most regular email services won’t allow you to use their email system for email marketing.
If you send out more emails than they consider to be “normal” email use, you can be blocked from sending emails. What’s more, you’d need to manually update your email list for opt-out requests, or you risk facing penalties. Start off on the right foot and go with an email marketing service. It’ll save you headaches down the road.
2. Sign-up forms.
You’ve likely seen plenty of sign-up forms for email lists on other sites. To be effective, though, you’ll need to consider where to place your forms on your website, beyond just a pop-up. There are a few options for form placement to consider:
- The very top of your blog or website. You can draw attention to what your business is about and briefly touch on the benefits of receiving your newsletter — all without annoying your users.
- Sidebar and footer. These are non-intrusive locations, and users would expect to find a signup form there.

If the user is getting to your footer’s opt-in form, it’s likely that they read through your entire post and are interested in what you have to say. Having a list of subscribers is great, but having a list of engaged subscribers is better.
3. Don’t forget social media.
If you’re already on social media, it’s a great place to build your email list. With most email marketing providers, you have the option to place an opt-in form directly on your business’s Facebook page. Your current Facebook audience might not notice it right away, but it’s a good way to gather addresses for new users who recently found your page (and are most likely looking at your business information). It’s also a good idea to periodically post a message advertising your newsletter so that your current audience is aware, too.

Contests are fun and engaging, and it’s a simple way to quickly grow your list of subscribers. In the same vein, another option would be to offer a discount for signing up. That way, your users get something, and you’re provided with their contact details.
4. Take your email signups offline.
The internet isn’t the only place to collect email subscribers. Depending on your business, consider throwing a mixer to network with people and bring a signup sheet. If you visit trade shows or conventions relevant to your business, make sure to bring business cards with your site information on it. And, if you have a storefront, don’t be afraid to ask customers for email addresses or to advertise your newsletter.
5. Don’t forget about your content.
Collecting an audience is great, but you’ll want to be sure to keep your readers subscribed. To do that, you’ll want to make sure that your content is engaging and focused. Your customers want to know about your business, and giving them information feeds that relationship. Provide brief tips or tricks on using your products. Highlight an upcoming event. Let them know the story behind the inspiration for your products. When you keep the focus on informing your readers, they’ll be more likely to engage. And that will keep them subscribed.
